Joni Mitchell When she is not living in Los Angeles, Joni Mitchell lives down the road from me in Horseshoe Bay and was born in November 1943 as I was. She in Saskatchewan; I, next door in Manitoba, Canada. Jon Denver was born a few weeks later, Dec. 31 1943 in New Mexico. Born in the same year has more meaning as I get older. I’ve never met Joni but have admired her songs for 35 years. She is of the most often played song writers in the music business and has had an enviable career, playing with many of the most popular musicians of the 20th century. I chose "Both Sides Now" to arrange and record. This is an all time favorite Joni song, which Judy Collins turned into a top-ten hit in 1968. Joni recorded an album, Both Sides Now, in 2000 with jazz standards, performed with orchestral arrangements by Vince Mendoza. The album included "A Case of You" and "Both Sides Now.” Some Mitchell' songs covered by other artists: Sarah McLachlan: "River" and "Blue" Amy Grant: "Big Yellow Taxi" Janet Jackson: "Big Yellow Taxi" George Michael "Edith And The Kingpin" Annie Lennox: "Ladies Of The Canyon" Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and Matthews Southern Comfort: "Woodstock" Nazareth "This Flight Tonight" Judy Collins, Clannad, Paul Young and Roger Whittaker; "Both Sides Now" by Tori Amos, Jane Monheit, Prince, and Diana Krall: "A Case Of You" In 2007, Herbie Hancock, a longtime friend of Mitchell's, released River: The Joni Letters, an album paying tribute to Mitchell's work. Contributors were Norah Jones, Tina Turner, Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell. |
